Dear Colleagues!
The Editorial Board of the journal «Experimental and Clinical Urology» informs you of updates to the manuscript selection criteria. These changes are driven by the need to adapt scientific periodicals to modern conditions of information exchange and the widespread use of generative language models.
- The issue of descriptive reviews
In the context of the availability of artificial intelligence tools capable of instantly aggregating information, classical descriptive literature reviews that merely compile and retell previously published data without deep critical analysis lose their status as scientific work possessing novelty.
The journal no longer considers manuscripts whose purpose is limited exclusively to the systematization of facts («what is currently known on the topic»), as this function is effectively performed by modern search algorithms.
In this regard, open submission to the «Literature Review» section will be discontinued as of 01.01.2026.
- Introduction of the «Analytical Review» category
The Editorial Board recognizes that the role of the human expert remains irreplaceable in the interpretation of contradictory data, identification of non-obvious patterns, and formulation of new hypotheses. A neural network can retrieve information, but it cannot assume responsibility for clinical recommendations or for a conceptual vision of the future of medicine.
Therefore, the journal retains the possibility of publishing review articles in the format of expert analytics, but introduces a strict filter:
A. Commissioned publications – priority publication rights for reviews are granted to leading specialists in their respective fields by personal invitation of the Editor-in-Chief or members of the Editorial Board. Topics for such reviews are formulated by the Editorial Board based on the most acute and controversial issues in contemporary medicine.
B. Initiative manuscripts (with prior approval) An author wishing to submit a review article on an initiative basis must first send the Editorial Board an extended abstract substantiating:
- Why this analysis cannot be performed automatically (algorithmically);
- What constitutes the author’s original concept or critical perspective that resolves existing contradictions in the literature.
- Eligibility criteria for analytical articles
Even in the event of approval, only works that meet the criteria of scientific novelty will be accepted for publication:
- The presence of a comparison of conflicting data and the author’s assessment of the methodological quality of primary sources.
- The article must conclude not merely with «conclusions», but with practical recommendations or the formulation of a new scientific problem.
- Systematic reviews with statistical data processing (meta-analysis) performed in accordance with PRISMA standards are encouraged.
Summary for authors
We reject the summarization of the past in favor of analyzing the future. If your review merely summarizes what has been read, it will not be accepted. If your review offers a solution to a complex scientific problem through literature analysis and is accessible only to a high-level expert, we are prepared to consider it under a special procedure.
Sincerely, the Editorial Board
