Golovanov Sergey Alekseevich graduated from the Kalinin State Medical Institute (now the Tver Medical Academy) in 1973. Then he studied "Pathological physiology" there. After graduating from postgraduate studies he worked as an assistant at the Department of Pathological Physiology there.

In 1978 Dr. Golovanov defended his thesis. In 1989 - joined the Research Institute of Urology of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, where he managed the biochemical research laboratory, later until 2017 - the scientific laboratory department.

In 2002 became Doctor of medical sciences. At present he is Head of the group of clinical laboratory diagnostics of the scientific laboratory department. The main field of his activity is the study of metabolic foundations of pathogenesis of urolithiasis, the role of lithogenic metabolic disorders as risk factors in the development of metabolic forms of urolithiasis, analysis of epidemiological trends in the prevalence of metabolic types of urolithiasis.

He has published more than 230 works in Russian and foreign journals. Under his scientific supervision, 1 candidate's thesis has been defended.
